 Golf Putter PC Case Mod

INFO: Greg turns a mid-tower PC case into an indoor putter's dream!

PUBLISH DATE: 01/19/04

AUTHOR: Greg Sowell

EDITOR: David Kroll

SPONSORS: Koolcases & Gloparty

Mounting the cannon took little to no effort, thanks to the supplied HD trays. I place one directly under the cannon inside the case. I smeared the top of the pipe with glue and let it do its thing.

29. Cannon feeder 30. Cannon mounted

Cutting the plastic case front was simple. I took the bay covers and held them in their respective places and traced my cuts with a sharpie. Zip, zip and I was done.

31. Gluing bezel around cannon 32. Ditto 34. A look at the innards 35. Guesstimate my cuts :)

Hmmm, what to do with the HD and power light? Gloparty.com had my answer. They sell clear golf balls that you put little glow sticks in. Pretty cool eh? A little dremel is in order. I cut one of the balls in half and proceeded to drill a couple holes in it. I then shoved my LED’s in said holes and applied a little hot glue for good measure. Tadaaa, glowing balls! Hehe.

37. Shipped balls in this bag 38. What it came with 39. Ball with glow stick hole 40. Wicked

41. Divide and concur 42. Almost perfect halves... 49. LEDs mounted 50. A little more length

This was about the time I started on my switches. I wired the double pole double throw switch to not only turn on the ball returner at the bottom, but also to turn on their green LED’s. :) The cannon was wired with a simple momentary switch. All of the wire used for the switches was stranded Cat5. Simple, effective and CHEAP wire!

43. Switches wired

Covering the case was the simplest task! This chore can be summed up in 4 steps:

  1. Cut a piece of astro turf slightly larger than the piece you want to cover.
  2. Spray both surfaces with adhesive.
  3. Place the turf over the piece.
  4. Trim around the edges.

(Ben Stein voice) “Wow, that was hard!” (/End Ben Stein Voice.)

44. A dreadlock 45. Cut a little large 46. Spray adhesive

48. Front covered 51. Cannon hole

Mounting the switches was easy. I took golf tees and cut them in half. I then notched them to fit over the switches. The DPDT switch had a metal shaft, so I just drilled out the middle of a tee and cranked it on. This is the same time that I went ahead and drilled a couple holes in the front case bezel for the lights. I then hot glued the half ball over said holes.

52. Mounted HD/Power LED's 53. Tees for switches 54. Test fit w/ switch

It seems like there is nothing left, but to challenge your friends! I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed creating it. This mod would not have been impossible if it were not for the great people at Koolcases and Gloparty.

55. Finished 1 56. Finished 2 57. Finished 3 58. Finished 4

60. All aglow 61. Nightlight action

Bonus:

Editor's Closing Notes:

This article was sent to me way back in the middle of October. Due to personal circumstances, I could not get this edited and up on the web. One thing has happened since then. The aforementioned case is no longer available at Koolcases. I can't seem to find a review/link to it on the web. If you really want one, I'd go inquire at Koolcases. Or just go look around, there maybe something else you would like to replace that ugly beige case of yours inexpensively.

In the past, Koolcases carried a lot more diversified cases, but now seem to be carrying more popular cases than unique ones. I only say that, because I haven't personally visited Koolcases for months myself now, and there was more of a variety then. Anyway, with that said, if you want glowy things go to Gloparty. They do have some neat lighting novelties there. Don't forget to send feedback to Greg. He loves it! :) So maybe the case in this mod isn't timeless, but the mod sure and the hell is! So until the next time...David out.

Update 1/31/05:

    Koolcases no longer exists.
