Razer Vs. Razer:

Below you can see how this new Viper compares to an older Razer Boomslang mouse. With that one, it did take some time getting used to, but was well worth it. Well worth it indeed! When I purchased it many years ago, I was more into gaming at that time. Running a website isn't the easiest job in the world, so gaming went out the window. I did continue to use my Razer long after, due to the fact that I was used to it, and cropping pictures and content creation requires accuracy too. Anyone that has that in common with me (or perhaps you are a graphic professional or artist) you won't be let down by the best line of mice in the world.

(10) Viper Vs. Boomslang

Let's show this thing working finally:

The fist picture in this section is the Viper taken with the flash on my Fuji. Yeah pretty boring. But when we turn out the lights, that is when the fun begins. I couldn't get a good picture of the Viper with all the lights off, but I did luckily get a nice one that you can see in picture 14. It takes two seconds for the mouse to go into low power mode. That difference you can see in picture 13, and 14. I'd almost rather have my mouse light up full all the time, but that is probably controlled by the optical chip. Any of you modders want to add some LED's, once again, go right ahead. One screw, and your time is all that is stopping you...

Gaming:

Like I said earlier, I don't do much gaming anymore regretfully. I have however taken the Viper for quite a few spins in offline Quake 3, and both Serious Sam 1, and Serious Sam 2. Results were as expected. Phenomenal! A higher DPI mouse does take a little getting used to, but in a good way! Case in point, I know my MX700 is fully charged now. It has been in its cradle since the Viper arrived for review.

The insides:

Even though I am very curious, I will not be taking the Viper apart in this review. If you want to see the insides, I suggest you go to the gallery over at Razer Blueprints. Not only will you see the inside of the Viper, you'll find tons of pictures, and information on Razer's past and present mice.

Summary:

Although I will be giving facts, and my personal opinions in the Pros and Cons section, don't let that sway you at all. This is by far the best optical mouse in existence. I could wish for a slightly different mouse, but I can't let my opinion in general, rate this mouse in its current form. Extraordinary! Save your money folks, and buy one of these now! You won't regret it. I promise! (Unless you hate smaller mice. Most normal people will have no problems.)

Pros:

  • Accurate, light, and small

  • 1000 DPI

  • Very good price for the technology involved

  • Very slick Teflon pads installed

  • Easy to get inside the mouse. (Cleaning, modding, etc,.)

  • Configurable software

  • Less than 4 megs memory usage for Razer Control Software

  • True Ambidextrous design

  • Mouse lights up!

Cons:

  • Smaller than previous Razer mice

  • Very light - Not a problem if you are used to light mice. I prefer mine heavier personally.

  • Plastic click buttons. I'd love to see rubber ones.

  • Only 3 buttons.

"The Viper is the best optical mouse on the planet, bar none!"

Closing:

After writing the above section, I decided to NOT change what I had written before in the summary. It seems that my personal opinions were only in the Cons section. So consider the score above too, and like I said, just go get one. We don't hand out 100% scores here very often. Out of I'm guessing, 80 reviews, I bet only 3 or 4 made 100%.

I'd like to thank Robert "Razerguy" Krakoff for sponsoring the Viper for review. I'm very glad Razer is back after some great times of struggle. Thanks for coming by. Until next time...

Closed - The art of retail packaging:

Razer was nice enough to send over some artwork. Expect the retail package to look like something below. In the retail channel, it will also include the driver CD. However, if you order through the Razer Store, you will receive the LAN Pack for free, and the driver CD, but it won't be in the retail box. You can still order a LAN Pack online, so keep that in mind if you buy yours through a retail channel.
